Lowdown #2
The retro trend has been on the rise and I'm loving it. Bands like Capital Cities has made a splash with the song Safe and Sound and its ties to jazz, Justin Timberlake's new persona and themed music giving tribute to big bands and Motown, or the gravitation pull we all felt to Lana Del Rey and her Nancy Sinatra vibe over the years. Even more so we felt her allure when she blew our minds away with the theme song, Young and Beautiful, for the movie The Great Gatsby last year. Banana Republic started the Mad Men fashion craze a few seasons back and it's still in full motion. Television shows like Mad Men, Master's of Sex, and Bates Motel show the growing popularity for shows of a certain romantic mod-era. Movies have been keeping up on the fad with films such as The Help, American Hustle, The King's Speech, The Great Gatsby, Midnight in Paris, My Week with Marilyn, and Saving Mr. Banks. It's been a slow brewing trend but I'm happy it's making a big push in all aspects of the cultural realm. For a short period of time, my taste and personality get to shine in this trend of retro(spect)!
I've been taking on the daunting task the last few years to revamp my music collection. I've been more active in finding new music that interests me, and relaying less on the radio to give me the 3 songs a years that I appreciate, or my friends so much. Don't get me wrong, I love hearing new music from my friends (especially my brother-in-law), that's one of the best ways to find new music. However, searching for music that I enjoy all on my own, has been a difficult and exciting challenge. I think music is a hobby we all take pride in, and I love taking the time and effort to search for my next new playlist.
One of the many ways I have been able to accomplish this feat is by paying attention to commercials, movies, or listening to random radio stations that play less known music. The key element to focus on in this particular blog post is commercials. Without fail the best commercials for music, all day e'ry day, are Heineken commercials.
Here are some of my favorites to wet your musical taste buds.
The Perfect Date, 2011
Music: Jaan Pahechan Ho by Movie Gumnaam
The Switch, 2012
Music: Love Letter by Clairy Browne and the Bangin' Rackettes
Skyfall Commercial 2012: The Express
Music: Man Like That by Gin Wigmore
Just admit it, the music is AMAZE-BALLS!!! Not to mention that I love the classic cinematic elements that go along with each of their commercials. I always stop and stare at a Heineken commercial on t.v. They certainly know how to keep my attention and make it fun to watch. However, I'm always disappointed when my Friday night outings don't reflect the speakeasy/underground cocktail lounges, that make these commercials so much fun to be apart of. If only I lived in 1960's Paris, then I might have a chance of living out that fantasy. At least for now, Heineken can keep making my pretentious wishes come true in my fantasy world.
